Want
to Support Homeless Veterans, Elders and cultural programs for
the children?
|

|
We
are also asking for donations in order to support the renovation
or the building of three Community Centers,
which are critical to the well being of isolated communities
during the months of severe weather. When the weather gets
bad, people gather in community centers in order to have
heat and food. Some areas lack these centers and people
with meager food storage and no heat can be stranded in
bad storms for long periods of time.

Sisseton: See
our service opportunities for requests of materials
to repair the roof, bathroom and windows of this particular
center. This Center can then be used to house homeless veterans
who will act as caretakers. Cultural programs for the children,
taught by the elders, encourages community cohesiveness,
and promises to keep the children connected to their traditional
ways. Studies show that children who are well grounded in
their culture are better prepared to succeed in school and
future endeavors. Click here

Wanblee: Wanblee is a small town of 300 on the
fringe of both the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations. Community
members do not have a Center of any kind and are isolated
from the more crowded and active town of Pine Ridge. Due to
their isolation, they do not have access to many of the goods
that are often sent into the bigger towns. The children there
have a very high rate of suicide, and lack any kind of stimulating
activities. The Community Center will focus on the Arts, within
the Lakota culture, and will be a place for children to engage
in activities that connect them to their elders and enrich
their lives through meaningful activities. This program is
headed by Lance White Magpie, Lakota from Wanblee. He is an
accomplished dancer and MFA, who recently lost a beloved young
relative to suicide. Because Wanblee has so few resources,
we strongly encourage people to support Lance's efforts. |

LaPlante: LaPlante is on the Cheyenne River reservation,
and is a small isolated community about 45 minutes from
the larger city of Eagle Butte. LaPlante has a Community
Center that is falling down. Right now the food shortage
is hitting LaPlante very hard and people are going days
without a meal. This summer, a church group contacted us
about going out to repair the Boys and Girls Clubs in Eagle
Butte, and they held a barbeque in LaPlante. People were
taking burgers home to their families and the church members
were told it might be the only meat these families would
have all week.

THIS
YEAR WE ARE SEEING CRISES BEGIN
EVEN BEFORE THE
WEATHER BECOMES SEVERE!
|
|
|
Suicide
is now rampant. Every phone call to South Dakota results
in reports of another recent event of a child ending his
life. Unemployment is higher then ever, as are the accompanying
poverty rates.
We
are so grateful for everything the donors of Changing Winds
have done in the past and we humbly ask that you continue
to support our efforts.

Changing
Winds is so grateful for your help and strives to honor your trust
by making sure the children benefit from every dollar you send.
Your donations are never used for salaries and very little is
used for administration such as shipping and mailing. This year
we have received large quantities of excellent quality goods including
beds, bureaus, linens, clothing and more. It costs us $3,000 to
send out $20,000 worth of goods, so your donations actually appreciate
in value in terms of dollars spent for goods received on the reservations.
And
as you know, we make it easy for you to reach out to the children
in the way that suits you best. If you have other ideas about
how you'd like to help, please contact us at CWAdvocacyCenter@aol.com
or call 203-256-9720.
